Who is Bob Barnett?

Barnett Family

Bob Barnett graduated from the University of Evansville in 1991 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He met his future wife Cary (a Math major) there in 1988. After graduation, Bob moved back home to the Western Suburbs and began work as an efficiency engineer for Commonwealth Edison. At Comm Ed, Bob honed his skills in maximizing plant efficiency, gaining valuable expertise in streamlining systems and promoting effective, cooperative management of employees.

Outside the office, Bob eagerly pursued ways to demonstrate his lifelong devotion to community service; before long he was coaching Little League baseball in his hometown of Clarendon Hills and serving as chairman of the Board of Trustees at his childhood church in Hinsdale.

In 1993, Bob became the third generation to join BarnettBates, a small manufacturing business located in Joliet. Two years later, he and Cary married and moved into their first home together, a small house Bob had rehabbed in Westmont. While employed as a sales manager at BarnettBates, Bob added graduate school to his busy agenda, and quickly earned an M.B.A. with a concentration in Business Law and Finance. In 2005, he took over production operations for the family business.

With an eye toward the future, Bob and Cary began searching the area for a place to call home and raise a family. They soon settled on Downers Grove, moving there in 1998. Almost immediately, they sought ways to serve their new community: Cary joined the Downers Grove Junior Women’s Club, while Bob joined the Grove Foundation and coached Downers Grove Little League. Bob was also elected to serve as the 8th Precinct Republican Committeeman. They welcomed their first child, Bobby, in 2000: he was later joined by sister Ana in 2003 and little brother Will in 2006.

As his family expanded, so did Bob’s opportunities for community service. In 2000, he began the first of several terms on the Board of Elders at Immanuel Lutheran Church. In 2002, he was appointed to the Downers Grove Liquor Commission by former Mayor Brian Krajewski; in this position, he played a prominent role in a major re-write of the Village’s Liquor Ordinance. In 2004, Bob was elected Chairman of Immanuel Lutheran Church and in 2008, Mayor Ron Sandack appointed Bob to the Downers Grove Storm Water and Floodplain Oversight Committee.
